Castellabate, local history |
Castellabate grew around the castle, founded
in 1123, which served the population as shelter from raids by
the Saracens. Alleys full of corners, arcades, labyrinth stairways
lead through the intact ancient town centre. Not without reason
Castellabate was declared UNESCO world cultural heritage.
Santa Maria di Castellabate was known, on 18th
century, as "IscadelleChitarre", its originary area
and now the old town. The downtown of Santa Maria di Castellabate
is extended by two squares, Piazza Matarazzo and Piazza Lucia,
and the oldest houses of Santa Maria di Castellabate are located
in front of the little harbour, in a place named "Porte
le Gatte".
San Marco di Castellabate is a hamlet of Castellabate
and devoleped around the port. It is a famous tourist town and
received the blue flag thanks to the wonderful beaches of Pozzillo.
There were interesting remains of the Greek - Roman port several
tombs that are now in the museum of Paestum. Behind the town
of San Marco di Castellabate here is a wood, a natural Park
with many naturalistic paths.
